There is a strong requirement to implement poverty alleviation programmes to address poverty to reduce the number of children neglected and deserted/abandoned by their biological parents.
As a result of the high incidence of poverty in the area, the Child Support Grant received by a majority of caregivers is the only source of income for most households. Sadly a growing trend is emerging where more children are identified as being at risk due to the Child Support Grant not being used for the purpose which it was intended for.
Applications for foster care grants continue to increase as children are left in the care of extended family members especially grandparents after the death of one or both biological parents.
