BIRTH PARENT SUPPORT

Through in-service training programs and regular supervision, social auxiliary and community development workers commenced parenting skills workshops and were able to reach a larger number of foster and biological parents. Counseling services are provided to birth parents who wish to relinquish their children for adoption, so that they can make an informed choice.

PARENTAL SUPPORT

Prospective adoptive parents are guided through a stringent screening and preparation process, in order to understand the joys and challenges of adoption.

298 caregivers benefited from our Parenting Skills program. Our program is aimed at developing the capacity of parents to manage the range of parenting challenges that they experience. Neglect presents an ongoing biggest challenge due to poverty, limited parenting skills and substance abuse.

There is a strong requirement to implement poverty alleviation programmes to address poverty to reduce the number of children neglected and deserted/abandoned by their biological parents.

As a result of the high incidence of poverty in the area, the Child Support Grant received by a majority of caregivers is the only source of income for most households. Sadly a growing trend is emerging where more children are identified as being at risk due to the Child Support Grant not being used for the purpose which it was intended for.

Applications for foster care grants continue to increase as children are left in the care of extended family members especially grandparents after the death of one or both biological parents.
